| 🏈 Wisconsin Athletic Director Steps Down | - Chris McIntosh has stepped down as the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Athletic Director. He’s taking a job with the Big Ten, leaving the program amid major changes and increased pressure on the football team.
- McIntosh, a former Badger player, became AD in 2021 and soon after made two high-profile moves — neither of which has delivered the hoped-for results. Supporters say his decisions came during a pivotal moment for the program.
- Effective immediately, Marcus Sedberry has been named interim director. Since 2022, Sedberry has served as UW’s deputy athletic director and chief operating officer, and last year, also became general manager of Wisconsin Athletics.
- 🏀 Elsewhere in the sports world, Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers is also stepping down. The franchise has just had one of its worst seasons. [News 3, Madison 365]
| | 😷 Madison Rolls Out Real-Time Air Quality Map | - The city has launched an air quality map featuring hourly data from over 40 city sensors, which allows residents to check neighborhood air quality in real time on the Love My Air Wisconsin website.
- The interactive map uses color-coded points to indicate pollution levels, ranging from a “good” green to a “hazardous” maroon. It also provides detailed sensor data and historical trends.
- The map shows concentrations of PM2.5, a pollutant produced by sources such as vehicle emissions and wildfire smoke. These tiny particles, no larger than 2.5 micrometers, can cause severe health issues, such as heart and lung problems.
- The initiative is funded by a $430,000 EPA grant and developed in partnership with the Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin.
- 🔥 Last summer’s smoke-filled skies showed us how climate change hits kids. Now, 15 Wisconsin youth are suing the state to do something about it. [Wisconsin State Journal 🔐, Love My Air Wisconsin, City Cast Madison 🎧]
| | 🏗️ Apartments Could Replace Regent Street Businesses | - An Illinois developer has proposed demolishing Hong Kong Cafe and Choles Floral on Regent Street to build a six-story, 111-unit apartment building with about 1,200 square feet of commercial space. The building would consist mostly of studios and some larger apartments, and the proposal includes building 60 underground parking spots.
- The redevelopment proposal has sparked debate among city officials and local business leaders who say they’re concerned the plan falls short of Madison’s zoning requirements for retail frontage on Regent Street. Community leaders are pushing for more commercial space to maintain Regent Street’s local business character. If approved, construction could begin later this year with a projected opening of mid-2028. [Wisconsin State Journal 🔐]
