Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Madison! City Cast's Lizzie Goldsmith here, filling in for Rob 👋 Full disclosure: I am not (yet) a birder, but I always keep an ear out for birds whenever I go for a walk or a run. Now is really the time to get those binoculars out, though, with so many species migrating through the region this spring 🐦

Today on the City Cast Madison podcast, host Bianca Martin chats with Dexter Patterson (AKA the Wisco Birder) about the pros of birding (there are no cons!), and how to get started.

🎤 Kirk Bangstad To Run for Governor

  • On Saturday, Minocqua Brewing Company owner and former Wisconsin Legislature candidate Kirk Bangstad announced via a livestream his intention to run for Wisconsin governor. Expressing his dissatisfaction with the current Democrat gubernatorial candidates and wanting someone who can "stand up to Trump," he's working to collect the needed 2,000 signatures between now and May 15.
  • Bangstad recently outraged conservatives when he posted on social media about the attempted Trump assassination in April, suggesting that either the attempt was "faked," or someone “in the Resistance needs to work on their marksmanship." The post caught the attention of federal agents, who interviewed Bangstad about it last week.
  • The bigger picture: Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, Madison state Rep. Francesca Hong, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley are among the more than half a dozen Democrats running for governor, in what polls are suggesting will be a close race. The primary election is set for Aug. 11. [Fox 6, WPR, PBS Wisconsin]

📉 Wisconsin Loses Thousands of Manufacturing Jobs

  • The state's manufacturing workforce shrank by nearly 10,000 jobs between January 2025 and January 2026 — the continuation of a steady decline that began in 2022. Early numbers seem to indicate that there's been a slight rebound over the last couple months, however.
  • Industry leaders say this decline is largely because of an aging workforce rather than mass layoffs. Economic uncertainty is also a factor, though, and employers are less likely to fill vacated positions. [WPR]

Oreo can't wait to meet his furrever family! (Dane County Humane Society)

Meet Oreo! This 2-year-old pup was transferred to Dane County Humane Society in mid-April from an overcrowded shelter in Texas. Oreo was adopted shortly after, but the home wasn’t the right fit, so DCHS is helping him find a new family.

Oreo can be shy when meeting new people, but once comfortable, he shows his fun, energetic, and playful personality — he enjoys being around his people. He’s also treat-motivated, already knows "sit," and likes playing with plush and rope toys. Oreo is looking for a home (not an apartment) without children. He has met dogs, but any introductions should be done slowly. Oreo would thrive with a family who will help him build trust and his confidence while continuing to work on his positive reinforcement training. Once that trust exists, he’s sure to be your most loyal companion. Oreo is staying in a quieter area of the shelter, so ask about him in DCHS’s Adoption Center.
