Today’s Must Know

UW-Madison Has Jobs To Fill and Problems To Solve

Despite the summer break (for some), there’s a lot going on at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The flagship UW is currently dealing with fallout from a major pipe leak that’s closed more than 30 buildings, and is looking at big shoes to fill from the departures of its athletic director and chancellor.

🔎 The Search for the Next Chancellor

Applications for UW-Madison’s next chancellor are open until Sept. 10, with a hire expected later this year. Boston-based firm Isaacson, Miller is assisting with the chancellor search to the tune of nearly $300,000, though the final cost will be assessed once the chancellor is selected.

Simultaneously, a search for the new president of the University of Wisconsin system is underway. That role is expected to be filled in mid-to-late fall before UW-Madison’s chancellor is selected.

🏈 WI Native Named Athletic Director

Last week Shawn Eichorst was appointed to serve as the university’s new athletic director. Eichorst played college football at UW-Whitewater, served in leadership roles for university athletics departments in Texas, Nebraska, and Miami, and held executive roles at UW-Madison Athletics from 2006 to 2011.

The Urban League of Greater Madison’s president and CEO is calling for a formal review of Eichorst’s hiring to see if it was in line with policies and equal opportunity standards. The Urban League's letter to UW-Madison’s chief HR officer also wants to know whether there were conflicts of interest in the recruiting process. [WPR]

📽️ Cinematheque Cancelled Due to Pipe Leak

Without air conditioning, dozens of campus buildings at UW-Madison, including Vilas Hall, are completely or partially closed to the public.

This means UW Cinematheque organizers have cancelled movie screenings for July and ended their “Bleak Week” series early. RIP. The university enlisted temporary diesel-powered chillers across campus to cool still-open medical and research areas on campus. [Isthmus]

When to repair vs. replace your roof

Not every roof problem means you need a new roof. A good repair can add years of life to your existing roof and help delay a major expense. But the right choice depends on whether you’re extending a useful roof’s life or delaying a problem that could reach the inside of your home. We built a simple decision tree to help Madison homeowners weigh age, damage, appearance, risk, and long-term value.

What Madison's Talking About

🛠️ Laborers Union Offers Peer Support Program

The Wisconsin Laborers District Council, which represents 10,000 members, has launched a peer support program for members with addiction, substance abuse or mental health challenges. It’s the third program of its kind in the U.S. Three members have been selected and trained to work as the union’s first full-time peer support specialists and the program has a round-the-clock hotline members can call if they need help. 🤑 Rising Childcare Costs Hit WI Families

Families could face even higher childcare costs since state payments that have propped up child care providers for years ended last week. The latest figures from the state’s Department of Children and Families show the median price for full-time infant care in a child care center is $17,400 a year, an 8% increase from last year.

  • Meanwhile, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has directed city departments to propose 2% budget reductions for next year in anticipation of rising expenses and no extra relief from the state. [The Cap Times, Wisconsin Watch]

🖼️ Catura's Art & Framing Is Closing

The far west side store will close this month after 34 years of helping customers curate interiors. "I've been threatening to retire for 10 years, and I'm tired of telling myself I'm going to retire and am ready to do it,” said owner Margaret Madden. [🔒 Wisconsin State Journal]

🥵 Extreme Heat Increases Drug Overdose Risks

We’re through the latest heat wave, but with more summer to get through brings increased risk of drug overdoses and overdose deaths. Health officials are urging residents to know the signs of an overdose and sign up for alerts about overdose spikes. Public Health Madison & Dane County offers free supplies like Narcan, fentanyl test strips, and more.

  • Last summer, City Cast Madison host Bianca Martin spoke to Public Health Supervisor Julia Oslen to learn more about what happens when overdoses spike in Dane County. [PHMDC, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🍻 Sun Prairie Dive Bar For Sale

📰 Extra! Extra! Given the recent heat, nothing feels better than a quick dip, but look before you swim! Madison lakes have experienced algae blooms that can be toxic. You can check the conditions on the Dane County Public Health website, and avoid swimming after a heavy rain.
