State Identifies Officer Who Shot Corey Ruiz

The state Department of Justice has identified Kiel Baitinger-Peterson as the Madison police officer who shot and killed Corey Ruiz on Madison’s east side on July 22. Here’s the latest on the case:

🚨 A Multi-Agency Investigation: Baitinger-Peterson and the three other officers involved in the incident are on administrative leave while the department’s Division of Criminal Investigation gathers evidence. DOJ officials say the officers are cooperating with the investigation, which is being assisted by a DCI crime response specialist, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Sun Prairie Police Department. [News 3]

⚖️ Next Steps: After state investigators determine the facts of the case, they will present them to the Dane County State’s Attorney Ismael Ozanne’s office, which will determine if any charges will be filed against Baitinger-Peterson or the three other officers.

The city’s independent police monitor, Aeiramique Glass, is also investigating the shooting, although Glass said she has been rebuffed in efforts to subpoena records in the case. Madison Police Chief John Patterson said his department will also conduct an internal affairs investigation once the DOJ investigation is finished. [Wisconsin Examiner, Cap Times]

Take Me Home Tuesday

Will you make a love connection with Valentine? (Dane County Humane Society)

Meet Valentine! As her name implies, this senior cat is all about love. She loves receiving attention and will purr loudly with happiness. She loves eating treats and being brushed. She loves curling up on your lap, and she’ll love being a member of your family.

Valentine is looking for a new home to explore and enjoy sunny spots, and a family who will shower her with attention, treats, and lots of love. Since Valentine has been with DCHS for a bit, she’s a member of their Lonely Hearts Club, which means all adoption fees have been waived through Aug. 16!

Bring Valentine home!
