| UW Floats Tuition Freeze in Exchange For State Aid
| Universities of Wisconsin officials said Monday they are willing to freeze tuition at its universities for the 2027-29 biennium, and restrict any increases to the rate of inflation for two years beyond that. | | But there’s a catch. | | In exchange for the freeze, the UW system wants the state to invest an additional $190 million in aid. Here’s the details of the plan, and how Wisconsin got here in terms of state aid for higher education. [WPR] | | 💰What’s the Plan? Called the “4-Year Tuition Pledge,” the plan was detailed Monday by Board of Regents President Kyle Weatherly and interim UW system President Renée Wachter. The move is part of the larger budget proposal for the upcoming biennium, and would mean that a four-year undergraduate student starting college in fall 2027 would see declining tuition (relative to inflation) over their four-year academic career. | | But, Weatherly said it would be difficult to implement a freeze without that $190 million commitment. | | “We have the same inflationary pressures that every other business, every other organization in the country is under right now. In addition to that, we need to fund our payroll increases that are set by the state.” | Kyle Weatherly | UW Board of Regents President |
| | The idea will be presented during budget negotiations in the fall to the state Legislature, and the decision may likely be up to Wisconsin’s next governor, Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany or Democrat Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. | | In February, Tiffany pledged that if elected governor he would reinstate the tuition freeze in response to recent increases in tuition and state aid. | 🚗 Theory Madison Becomes a Reality: Just in time for the arrival of UW-Madison students, an ambitious public-private project on Lake Street will open Aug. 24. Replacing the old Lake Street parking garage, the development combines a city-owned 410-stall parking garage and a privately-owned 700-unit student housing development on top dubbed “Theory Madison.” A regional bus terminal will open at the site in October. [City of Madison] | | 💰 Goodman Foundation Calls It Quits: The Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Foundation, the philanthropic group named after the brothers who founded Goodman’s Jewelers, will cease its operations at the end of the month. The foundation has invested over $67 million over the last 15 years in projects such as the Goodman Pool and Madison College’s South Campus. [News 3] | | 🚨 Madison and Monona Police at Odds Over Chases: Despite efforts to get along, the Madison and Monona Police Departments are clashing over their departments’ different approaches to high-speed chases, public records show. While Madison police can only chase over violent felonies, Monona police can chase for any offense, and the clash has led to legal disputes, public spats, and competing city resolutions. [🔒WSJ] | | 🚣 County Cuts Isthmus Out of Dredging Plan: The section of the Yahara River between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona will be excluded from the county’s plan to dredge sediment in effort to reduce flooding risks. A city watershed study found that dredging the urban portion of the river would have little effect, and that adding flooding infrastructure would be more successful. [Cap Times] | | 🏥 Measles Cases Confirmed in Iowa County: Wisconsin health officials have confirmed more than 30 cases of measles in Iowa, Lafayette, and Grant counties, and expect more as the disease surges. Wisconsin had the second-lowest measles vaccination rate in the country among kindergartners for the 2025-26 school year . | | | Were you able to look up where this dictionary mural is located, and why? (Rob Thomas / City Cast Madison) |
| ⬆️ Last Week’s Photo | | It’s located on Beld Street near the Wingra Bike Path! The dictionary is a holdover from when the building used to belong to the South Madison Library System. | | 🎉 Congratulations to Doug O., Tonya R., and Ty K. for being the first three people to guess correctly! | | ⬇️ This Week’s Photo | | Take a seat and tell me where this bathroom is! (Jade Iseri-Ramos / City Cast Madison) |
| Where is this bathroom located? A few clues: | | - It’s on Madison’s near east side
- It’s in a building you couldn’t even enter a month ago
- If you can guess right, that might be a market-able skill!
