Ten ways to stay cozy this fall

Madison's first chilly mornings are here, and so is the thermostat debate. A simple rule: 68°F when you're home and awake, and 60°F when you're asleep or away, which can reduce your energy use by as much as 10% a year. That tip and nine more from MGE, including a free energy-saving pack from Focus on Energy for eligible customers, can help keep your home comfortable this fall.

On Sept. 25, Madison opened its first new public library in 26 years. And the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park looks pretty different from the nine other Madison Public Library branches that came before.

Filling the “library desert” on Madison’s far east side, city leaders say the Imagination Center reflects what libraries have become in cities – not just places to study and check out books but community meeting spaces, children’s activity zones, and more. Take a virtual tour of the Imagination Center and let your own imagination get fired up. [City of Madison, 🔒WSJ]

🌳 A Library in a Park?

As the name suggests, the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park is the first Madison public library built inside a public park. It’s Madison’s 10th public library, and cost $18 million to build, $5.5 million of that came from state grants and $4.5 million raised by the Madison Public Library Foundation.

The design of the library takes full advantage of the natural setting, with green floors and glass walls that blend in with the environment outside. The ceilings are high, allowing in lots of natural light to read by.

📗 Indoors/Outdoors

The Imagination Center is also the first Madison public library to have an outdoor park pavilion that takes up half of the 17,500 square feet of the facility.

The pavilion includes a large multipurpose gathering room with retractable walls that can divide the space in two. The space is envisioned to be a much-needed community hub, where residents can meet, host seminars, even have movie nights. The meeting rooms aren’t yet open, but residents can start reserving space in November for 2027 gatherings.

Take Me Home Tuesday

Two cats - one light-colored, one brown and white.

This week’s Take Me Home Tuesday is a package deal! (Dane County Humane Society)

Meet the dynamic duo of Sonny and Oliver! Oliver (on the right) is shy but food-motived, and loves butt scratches when she’s feeling sociable. Sonny also starts out a little shy but quickly warms up, and will even crawl into your lap for snuggles.

These senior best friends adore each other and will snuggle and nap together. They also enjoy sitting in windows to watch the world outside. Sonny and Oliver are looking for a quiet home with no children or dogs where they can enjoy sunny window spots, plenty of peace and quiet, and lots of love and spoiling – together.

🐱 Bring Sonny and Oliver home!

📰 Extra! Extra! Book lovers would have a hard time finding a 1st-century papyrus scroll or a 1582 German bible at Barnes & Noble. But UW-Madison Memorial Library’s Special Collection has both of these, plus more than 300,000 rare books and other documents for scholars to peruse (but not check out).

Located on the library’s ninth floor, Special Collections just reopened after an 18-month hiatus to make improvements to the room’s fire-suppression system, to make sure these treasures last for future generations of bibliophiles as well 📚
