Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Madison! The City Cast Madison Neighbor dad hats have been flying out the door in the last week – thanks so much to all of you who signed up to become members! To know that so many of you value our work enough to support it financially just means the world to us. We got so many nice messages from new members, like this one from Hannah K.!

“I just moved back to Madison after living in a different state for the past seven years. I'm excited to be part of this community again and make this my forever home. City Cast Madison helps me stay informed on local news, promotes local events, and offers ways to give back.”

Thanks Hannah! While our fall membership campaign is coming to a close, we still have a few hats left in the closet. So there’s still time to become a City Cast Madison Neighbor and score one!

What Madison’s Talking About

📸 Not All County Supervisors Want Body Cameras: District 2 Sup. Heidi Wegleitner is introducing an amendment to County Executive Melissa Agard’s proposed 2027 capital budget that would cut close to $3 million of funding for police body cameras. Agard’s budget would pay for 200 body-worn cameras and 80 squad video systems for the Dane County Sheriff’s Department. Another proposed amendment by Sups. Keith Furman and Amy Larson would keep the funding for the cameras but also call for more transparency and time for public comment on the sheriff's draft policies. [🔒WSJ]

⚖️ City Lawsuit Against Social Justice Center Delayed: Despite a reported fight over the weekend outside the Social Justice Center’s building on Williamson Street, the City of Madison is holding off on filing a lawsuit against the organization since it has committed to addressing alleged ongoing nuisance activity. The city brought up the lawsuit in September citing that police received more than 300 calls for service in the area around the center between January 2025 and August 2026. [News 3]

🪧 No Kings March Comes Back to Madison: This Saturday No Kings is hosting a march at 2 p.m. starting at James Madison Park and proceeding to the Madison Municipal Building where, at roughly 3 p.m., they will host a fair with music, speakers, and resources for voters. The organizers will also have a collection table for the Extended Hands Food Pantry, which needs food and other essential items. [No Kings Madison]

☕ Liv’s Drink Emporium Plans Madison Expansion: The Sun Prairie business is expanding to Madison’s east side in the former U.S. Bank branch on Cottage Grove Road. They plan to adapt the teller window into a drive through and depending on the city permitting process, will open by February. [🔒WSJ]

🐮 Moo-vie Release in Madison: The documentary “World Without Cows” is coming to Marcus Point in Madison on Oct. 14 after touring festivals in a one-night-only national rollout. As citizens of the dairy state, Madisonians can hear about the challenges and opportunities cows present as we navigate climate change. [Substack: Not That Rob Thomas]

❤️‍🩹 Rippling Effects of Dane County’s Budget Shortfall: Journey Mental Health has said it can no longer absorb the costs associated with the county’s mental health services. The nonprofit’s current contract has the nonprofit receiving funding from both Medicaid and the county, but Medicaid reimbursements have fallen short of county projections. Journey’s CEO is seeking a new contract with the county, where the county budgets for the services it needs and bears the cost if Medicaid doesn’t approve reimbursements. [🔒WSJ]

⚾ Go Brewers! The Milwaukee Brewers are on a hot streak right now, currently standing 2-0 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. On the City Cast Madison podcast today, host Bianca Martin breaks down why the team is doing so well with contributor Emily Winter. The two also talk about Madison’s (infamous) Halloween lore and an exciting show coming to the Barrymore this week. [ 🎧 City Cast Madison]

A man with dwarfism in a yellow shirt, red hat, and red pants sits on a stool. He is surrounded by a sandwich, musical notes, beer, an open book, a telescope, skis, a money bag (with the word geld on it) a sailboat, and two interlocking rings. Under him, the words “Des Studentens Traum” are written in a fancy text.

This little imp wants to party! (Rob Thomas / City Cast Madison)

Where can you find this guy (and his friends)! A few clues:

  • It’s on the UW-Madison campus
  • It’s in a place with a strong German tradition
  • Don’t ‘rat’ out the location if you already know!
