Your Guide to Cooking Classes in Madison

00:00:00

Whether you’re a novice cook, burgeoning chef, or just looking to try something new, cooking classes are a great way to build and learn new skills while getting fed along the way.

In Madison, there are plenty of cooking classes that offer both hands-on, in-person lessons, and virtual options. Cap Times Food Editor Lindsay Christians recently rounded a few of these classes up in a recent episode of City Cast Madison. Here’s a look at the menu of cooking classes Madison has to offer.

For the Budget Chef

The local co-op offers both free and paid classes, but even the classes with fees are very reasonable. In addition to cooking classes, the co-op also offers wellness classes that cover subjects such as nutritional supplements and managing blood pressure.

The library system offers classes with Chef Lily, AKA, “The Kids Chef.” Her classes are typically catered for kids aged 5-12 but can also be a good starting point for anyone looking to get into the basics. Chef Lily hosts her classes in person at various library branches but you can also find her full video instructions online.

For the Adventurers

The classes at this Hilldale shop make for the perfect date night adventure. You can cook a delicious meal with someone special in one of their hands-on classes. The shop also offers virtual classes for those who’d rather stay in. (And for the non-French out there, it’s pronounced “Sur La Tab.”)

The Monroe Street Shop offers virtual and in-person classes. Most cost between $50-60 and Lindsay recommends signing up for these classes quickly when they become available, as they tend to fill up fast.

The spice shop recently opened a beautiful new kitchen studio next to The Old Sugar Distillery where they offer classes that come with a full meal. Because these classes typically come with multiple courses, the price tag is a bit higher, usually running $75-150.

DelecTable offers professional chef-taught classes with hands-on learning, and of course, delicious food. Similar to Orange Tree, these classes sell out fast so act quickly if a class interests you.

For the hands-on cook, Madison College offers a range of classes for just about every kind of cooking. Sushi? Check. Mediterranean? Check. Fresh pasta? Check. The possibilities are endless.

For Bakers

For those looking to build their baking skills, Lindsay recommends classes at TheBaked Lab and Far Breton Bakery’s Pastry Chef Workshop.
