Covering a vast majority of Madison, the Capitol Neighborhoods are fairly self-explanatory. They are the neighborhoods that surround Capitol Square and extend a little ways outside the square. These neighborhoods are Bassett, Miffland, Mansion Hill, James Madison Park, and First Settlement. I curated places that are not as well known that you can add to your own personal Madison bucket list.

Places to Drink

Bradburys is a popular place to grab an espresso and a crêpe! Located on Hamilton Street, this coffee shop is not right on the square, which can cause it to be overlooked. Make sure to add this one to your coffee tour of Madison ☕

Canteen is a popular Mexican restaurant located on the square, but something not everyone may know about: their late night deals. From 9 p.m. to close, they have half off tacos, signature margaritas, and more! A great spot to grab a cheap, late night marg with your friends 🍹

Young Blood Beer Company is one of the best spots to grab a beer in Madison. Located on King Street, they are surrounded by a variety of other bars and restaurants. From a hazy IPA to sours, there is plenty to choose from. The draft list also often changes, so you’ll never get bored 🍻

Places to Eat

The Garden at the Great Dane is one of the best patios around the square. Many of you may know about the Great Dane, but not all of you may know about their patio that makes it feel like you stepped into Europe. With vines covering the walls and plants all around, it is a wonderful spot to grab a bite ☀️

New to the square is

Draper Brother’s Chophouse. Not only do they have steaks and chops, but they also have wonderful house made pasta. Their pasta maker is imported from Italy in an effort to be as traditional as possible 🍝

Things to Do

Bouldering is the newest athletic craze for many.

Boulders Climbing Gym has two locations, with one being downtown. Pick up a new hobby and give climbing a try. They also offer Climb4Community, which helps people get affordable memberships 🪨

Tavernakaya is a popular Japanese restaurant on the square. However, many may not know that during later hours, it turns into a club. Taverkaya’s Late Nite events take place Friday and Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. 🪩

Gamma Ray Bar is a new music venue located at 121 West Main Street. From DJs to live music to comedians, this venue has a lot to offer the people of Madison 🎤
