Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Madison! And thanks to all our City Cast Madison Neighbors who joined us last week for our member meetup at the Olbrich Park Biergarten! It was a beautiful night and such a treat to connect in person with you all.

We’re already thinking about our next member event – so far we’ve done a tour of the Capitol, a holiday party that turned into a karaoke night, and a crafting night. If you want to join the community and get an invite to the next meetup, become a City Cast Madison Neighbor!

Tomorrow is Election Day for the August primary! Are you ready? On the City Cast Madison podcast today, host Bianca Martin and producer Jade Iseri-Ramos take a deep dive into Tuesday’s election.

They talk about who’s running statewide and in Madison, and tell you everything you need to know in order to vote Tuesday, including polling location hours, what you need to register at the polls, and how to return an absentee ballot. Don't forget, you can also find your ballot, polling, and more election information at the MyVote Wisconsin website.

What Madison's Talking About

🧑‍🦼 Going the Distance For a Cause: To draw attention to threats to Medicaid-funded home care, a Fox Crossing man traveled 90 miles via motorized wheelchair to the Capitol in Madison. Carl Schulze spent 11 days on the journey to urge representatives to pass higher pay for caregivers, noting that President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” cut nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid funding. He arrived in Madison last Thursday afternoon and gave a speech at the Capitol. [WTMJ]

🚨 City Attorney Says Police Monitor Can’t Subpoena Department: State law forbids the Madison Police Department from sharing records related to the Corey Ruiz shooting with the city’s independent police monitor, city attorney Michael Haas said. Aeiramique Glass subpoenaed the MPD for the records, but Haas said that since the shooting is being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, those records are under state authority.

  • Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway criticized Glass for saying “I will burn this city down” in a video on social media following an altercation with police in which her hand was injured. “I think it’s disturbing anytime a city employee is calling for violence,” Rhodes-Conway said at a press conference last week. The Police Civilian Oversight Board’s executive committee countered in a statement that Glass’ comment wasn’t a call to violence, but an “emotional and impassioned response to the circumstances.” [ 🔐WSJ, 🎧City Cast Madison, News 3]

📱 Should Madison Teachers Be Able to Text Students? The Madison School Board is weighing a ban on district staff texting students outside of approved digital platforms. Prosecutors charged a Memorial High School teacher in March with sexual misconduct and grooming behavior, including exchanging 130,000 text messages with a student. [Cap Times, MPD]
