Over the weekend, Madison Parks celebrated its 130th birthday 🎂 Madison is a great city that offers natural spaces against an urban backdrop. There are 6,000 acres of land making up over 280 parks for everyone to enjoy. But how did it all begin?

History of Madison Parks

The Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association was founded by Edward Owen and John Olin in 1894, but Olin is revered as the “father of the parks system.” He helped raise about a quarter of a million dollars from private donations to preserve and protect Madison’s parks.

In 1938, the organization transferred its resources to the city. The Madison Parks Association was officially incorporated in 2003, continuing the idea of fostering community involvement and support. In 2013 the foundation hired its first employees. Throughout this time, the foundation launched various campaigns to raise money and awareness for parks in Madison.

What’s Next for the Parks?

The City of Madison is working to develop plans for the next five years to grow and improve the parks. The city is currently working on the Park and Open Space Plan for 2025-30. This follows their previous 2018-23 Park and Open Space Plan. These plans will adapt to changing trends, demographics, and overall needs of the city. Most recently, the city has placed “Wish Boxes” alongside different summer pop-up events. These boxes have information about the Park and Open Spaces Plans and a survey for folks to share their opinions.

How Do I Find the Best Park for Me?

The City of Madison website can help guide folks to the park that best fits their needs. Whether it’s a stroll, a spot to throw a frisbee, or maybe even play tennis, Madison has it all. So, what are you waiting for?! Get outside!
