As the second-largest city in Wisconsin, Madison’s daily hustle and bustle can be overwhelming.

But thankfully, it’s not too hard to get away and take advantage of the beauty and serenity of south central Wisconsin. Wisconsin State Parks offer the perfect opportunity for both escape and adventure. Here are five state parks within 30(ish) minutes of downtown.

4350 Mounds Park Rd., Blue Mounds, WI 53517

Blue Mound State Park is perched atop the highest point in southern Wisconsin, so needless to say, this park offers spectacular views all year round. This park also boasts more than 20 miles of hiking trails, off-road biking and cross-country ski trails, a family campground, and even a swimming pool in the summer.

3101 Lake Farm Rd., Madison, WI 53711

Capital Springs State Park is a newer addition to the Wisconsin State Park system. Located just minutes from downtown, this park offers camping, hiking and skiing trails, picnicking, fishing, and a boat launch on Lake Waubesa.

5140 Cty Hwy M, Waunakee, WI 53597

Governor Nelson is just a stone’s throw away from Madison’s west side. This park offers picturesque views, hiking trails, playgrounds, and prairies. Governor Nelson State Park is also one of the many places around Madison where you can view Native American effigy mounds.

2405 Door Creek Rd., Stoughton, WI 53589

Lake Kegonsa is the perfect spot for anyone who loves to be on or near the water. Located along a 3,200-acre lake, this park offers swimming, fishing, water skiing, sailing, and more.

8075 Old Sauk Pass Rd., Cross Plains, WI 53528

Cross Plains State Park is part of the Ice Age Complex and features a collection of glacial landforms, a gorge carved by meltwater, and expansive views of both driftless and glaciated terrain.
