After a pig named Rudi captured the hearts of Madisonians in 2023, City Council changed the law to allow residents to own pet pigs in the city, with some restrictions. But before you run to your nearest pig purveyor, Public Health Madison and Dane County says there are a few things to consider. Here’s what you need to know.
The Rules
Under the new regulations, a Madison home can keep one pig as a pet as long as it is 24 inches tall or less (at the shoulder), weighs less than 300 pounds, is current with all vaccination requirements, is microchipped, and is spayed or neutered.
Owners must also register for a Wisconsin State Premise License, which is a way for the state to keep track of where livestock live and can help owners be notified faster of any diseases or potential threats to their animals.
But just because owning a pig is legal, doesn’t mean they’re allowed everywhere. Home Owners Associations, landowners, and landlords have the right to deny a pig (or any animal) as a pet. So be sure to check your lease or rental agreement for any restrictions.
Do Your Research
Before bringing any new animal into your home, it’s important to know what you’re signing up for. Pigs will require specific care and maintenance to live happy and healthy domestic lives. On average, pigs live to be about 15 years old — so keeping one as a pet is a long-term commitment!
Just like cats and dogs, pigs need a clean place to sleep, litter box, food and water dishes, harness and leash, treats, and more. Having a USDA exotic animal veterinarian who is experienced with treating pigs is a vital first step when you’re bringing home your new pet.
